For Individuals in Generational Poverty:Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By World Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By World (Getting Ahead) is a class that helps individuals living with daily instability build their resources for a more prosperous life for themselves, their families, and their communities. In addition to Toledo-Lucas County, Getting Ahead is offered throughout the U.S., Canada and countries around the world.
Getting Ahead provides under-resourced individuals with the same information found in Bridges Out of Poverty, which is the workshop developed for community professionals working to end poverty.
The 50-hour Getting Ahead curriculum includes facilitators who help participants (called “investigators”) examine their experience of poverty and explore issues in the community that impact poverty − banking, housing, jobs, transportation − providing critical information the community can use to take action to end poverty. Each investigator’s assessment allows them to gauge and build resources as part of their move to self-sufficiency. With the concepts, tools and relationships in hand, people in poverty make a difference in their own lives and in the life of their community.
